Welcome to my home page. In these pages I post blogs about political news and contemporary social, political and economic policies in the United States, the UK, other European countries, as well as China and the Middle East. I also comment on Russia, where I spend many summers. Readers will find book reviews on topics ranging from biographies, politics, historical events, especially in the twentieth century and afterwards, and I will also anticipate trends into the future.
About
I started this site so I could introduce my new book, The Great Forgetting: The Past, Present and Future of Social Democracy and the Welfare State. For a long time I had been reading that social democracy, and the welfare state, were both relics of the past. But the opinion polls that I was reading told me that people everywhere, including in the US, wanted more help from the state than they were getting. People believed that jobs should be available for anybody who wanted them, and the state should help people get work. Polls also told me that the vast majority of people wanted what Europe had: universal, affordable health care, better social security systems for retirement, access to affordable housing, paid sick leave, paid parental leave, and free or very cheap tuition for higher education. In sum, the majority of Americans want what the Nordic countries already have, the sooner the better. Americans, also, with the British close behind, want a much fairer progressive tax system to help pay for the social transfers to which they believe they are entitled. Unless Anglo-America becomes much more equal and reverses the gross social inequality that has emerged, an increasingly divided, unstable, and unfair future awaits all of us.
